Why You Should Add Body Scrubs To Your Beauty Regime

For many years I thought using a body scrub was just one of those luxury extras, and to be honest never really even considered using a scrub. But as my passion for soapmaking grew, so did my interest and passion for skincare, and the benefits of using natural ingredients. I now believe my skin is softer and healthier than it was years ago after focusing on creating my own natural and nourishing skincare products! Scrubs are now a regular part of my regime. Let me explain why you should incorporate a body scrub into your routine too!

What is a body scrub?

Body scrubs are an exfoliant based product that includes ingredients that assist with the removal of dead skin cells and other build-ups. There are so many scrubs on the market, and the quality and type of exfoliant vary widely, with many products using plastic beads to achieve the exfoliating effect. In my experience, the best scrubs contain natural exfoliating ingredients, such as salt, sugar, ground-up seeds, shells and beans.

So why use a body scrub?

Using a body scrub to exfoliate assists in removing dead skin cells that build up on the surface of your skin. This outer layer of skin is called the epidermis. The skin is the largest organ in the human body and the epidermis plays an important role in enabling the regulation of water released from the body. The water released from the skin, which you know as perspiration, is vital for regulating the bodies temperature. As well as regulating temperature, the skin is a vital barrier for your body, keeping everything where it should be! Imagine what we would look like without this vital organ?

It goes without saying that we should take good care of this integral part of our bodies – without it, we wouldn’t be alive! Despite that we often abuse our skin – we don’t realise the amount of gunk that is left on our skin from simply living our lives. Not a very technical term, I know, but an appropriate way to describe it!

The weather can play a part in this too, think about how dusty your car looks after the rain or strong winds, this same build-up happens in all the little nooks and crannies on our bodies.

Other build-ups come from unabsorbed lotions and creams we apply. And the shedding of skin cells, we lose an incredible 30,000-40,000 skin cells a minute!

Dull skin and Ingrown hairs? Scrubs can help this! Both dull skin and ingrown hairs can be caused by the build-up of dead skin cells. Scrubs allow the thousands of hairs all over your body to freely grow and not grow in on themselves from being blocked by build-up.

Perspiration, Dirt, Lotions and Dead-skin – time to reset!

Using a body scrub alongside a gentle cleansing soap lifts this build-up, leaving it refreshed, leaving your skin feeling soft and revitalised.

Take an extra few minutes to care for yourself

When I first began using scrubs I found it so hard to remember to do it regularly enough to get all of these amazing benefits. Over time I have gotten better at taking a few extra minutes each week to take care of every inch of my body. One of the most unexpected side effects of this small change in my regime is an increased sense of care over my body. It’s the perfect indulgence for a ‘Self-Care Sunday’.
